9 Things You Can See a Pharmacist for Instead of Your GP

I’m a pharmacist – here are 9 things you could see us for instead of your GP

Ahsan Bhatti, Superintendent Pharmacist at licensed online pharmacy Quick Meds and owner of Frankley Pharmacy in Birmingham, explains some of the common conditions a pharmacist can help with, without needing to make a GP appointment.

If you’ve ever spent weeks waiting for a GP appointment for a health concern or you’re dealing with something that feels too embarrassing to discuss, you might be overlooking a more accessible option: your pharmacist.

While most of us are used to popping into a pharmacy to collect a prescription or pick up painkillers, pharmacists can do much more than dispense medication.

“Much of the public still doesn’t understand what a pharmacist does besides dispensing prescriptions,” says Ahsan Bhatti, Superintendent Pharmacist at Quick Meds. “And with GP waiting times getting longer over the winter months, understanding what your pharmacist can help with could make a real difference.”

“The NHS Pharmacy First scheme has now made it much easier to access treatment at community pharmacies for common conditions without needing a GP appointment, while licensed online pharmacies are a good option for other lifestyle issues, particularly where patients may feel embarrassed to discuss their concerns face to face.”

Here, Bhatti explains some of the health concerns you may be able to discuss with a pharmacist instead of booking a GP appointment.

It’s worth remembering, however, that not every condition can be diagnosed or treated by a pharmacist, and the services available vary between NHS and online pharmacies. Pharmacists are trained to recognise when symptoms need further investigation and will recommend seeing a GP or another healthcare professional when appropriate.

  1. Seasonal allergies, colds and flu

Struggling with a runny nose, sneezing, sinus problems or a sore throat? Your pharmacist can recommend treatments to help ease common seasonal symptoms, from antihistamines for hay fever and allergies to remedies for colds and flu, including antibiotics. They can also advise on how to manage symptoms at home, making the pharmacy a useful first stop when seasonal illnesses strike.

  1. Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

That burning sensation when you pee, or the constant urge to go to the loo, could be signs of a UTI. Through the NHS Pharmacy First service in England, eligible patients can receive an assessment and, where appropriate, antibiotics directly from a pharmacist, without needing to book a GP appointment first.

  1. Acne and other skin conditions

From persistent breakouts to irritated skin, pharmacists can recommend treatments for common skin complaints and help you navigate the many skincare products available. They can advise on ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and explain how to use treatments effectively, without unnecessarily irritating your skin.

  1. Thrush

Vaginal itching, soreness and unusual discharge can be uncomfortable, but you don’t need to feel embarrassed about asking for advice. Pharmacists can offer confidential guidance on thrush, explain treatment options and recommend suitable antifungal products. Online pharmacies can be a particularly discreet option if you’d prefer to discuss intimate symptoms without a face-to-face consultation.

  1. Hair loss

Finding more hair than usual in your brush can be unsettling, but a pharmacist can talk you through available treatments and help you understand which options may be appropriate for your type of hair loss. They can also explain how treatments work, what results to expect and whether there might be any underlying cause.

  1. Bacterial vaginosis (BV)

An unusual fishy smell or a change in vaginal discharge could be signs of bacterial vaginosis, a common condition caused by an imbalance in vaginal bacteria. A pharmacist can help you understand your symptoms and discuss appropriate treatment options, including whether a consultation with a prescriber or another healthcare professional is needed.

  1. Period pain

If period cramps are leaving you reaching for a hot water bottle every month, a pharmacist can advise on pain relief and explain which medicines may be suitable for you. They can also offer practical advice on managing common menstrual symptoms, helping you find ways to make that time of the month more manageable.

  1. Acid reflux and heartburn

That uncomfortable burning sensation in your chest after eating, or the feeling of stomach acid creeping up your throat, could be acid reflux. Your pharmacist can recommend treatments such as antacids and alginates to help relieve symptoms, as well as advise on lifestyle changes that may make a difference, from adjusting meal times to identifying trigger foods. If symptoms are frequent, they’ll also be able to advise on the next steps.

  1. Weight management

If you’re looking to manage your weight, your pharmacist may be able to offer more support than you realise. Depending on the pharmacy, this could include advice on healthy eating and lifestyle changes, structured weight-management programmes or consultations about prescription weight-loss medicines. However, services vary: some are available privately, while NHS-funded weight-management treatments have specific eligibility criteria and may not be offered by every pharmacy.

When should you see a pharmacist rather than a GP?

The key is knowing what your pharmacist can help with, and when you need a different kind of care.
Pharmacists are trained to recognise when a patient needs further assessment and refer them to another healthcare service when necessary.

“Our role is to ensure that the right patient reaches the right professional at the right time,” says Bhatti. “The aim isn’t to replace GPs or encourage people to avoid medical care, but to help patients access the right support without unnecessary delays.”

“As the NHS faces continued pressure, making better use of community and licensed online pharmacies could help patients access appropriate care more conveniently.”

So the next time you have a health concern, it could be worth asking what support your local pharmacy offers – and whether it’s the right place to start.
